Malta or Verona? Why not both...

One of my favorite things about reading and writing fiction is traveling in space and time to new--and old--places.

DON'T LOOK BACK is set in Malta, which I was lucky enough to visit last summer as research for the book. 😍 Accuracy is important so I went the extra mile (or 6,000) to make sure I got the setting right.

Valletta, the capital of Malta and where we stayed, is a stunning city surrounded by limestone walls that were built after the Great Siege of 1565.

This stock photo shows the outer walls of the city along with our hotel and the rooftop terrace where we enjoyed watching fireworks every night of our stay. Not surprisingly, Kira and Rand enjoy the same rooftop terrace in the book.

This photo is one I took from the terrace looking down.

DON'T LOOK BACK releases July 19th in digital, print, and audiobook. Pre-order now to get the ebook at the discounted pre-order price.

Sometimes history is better left buried…

Six months after barely escaping a nightmare, Kira Hanson is ready to take the trip of a lifetime—one she hopes will answer questions about her father’s clandestine work recovering art stolen during World War II. But before she boards her flight, she’s waylaid by a friend in need and finally comes face-to-face with the Navy SEAL who saved her six months ago and then ghosted her.

Lieutenant Commander Randall Fallon is thrilled to cross paths with the shy art historian, but within minutes of their reunion he learns she’s in danger once again. Uneasy with the idea of her embarking on a trip to track down art thieves on her own, he just might have to reprise his role as undercover bodyguard and follow her to Europe posing as an art buyer.

Before you visit Malta, however, here is a chance to visit early Renaissance Verona...

A DAUGHTER OF FAIR VERONA by Christina Dodd releases June 25th

Once upon a time a young couple met and fell in love. You probably know that story, and how it ended (hint: badly). Only here’s the thing: That’s not how it ended at all.

Romeo and Juliet are alive and well and the parents of seven kids. I’m the oldest, with the emphasis on ‘old’—a certified spinster at twenty, and happy to stay that way. It’s not easy to keep your taste for romance with parents like mine. Picture it—constant monologues, passionate declarations, fighting, making up, making out . . . it’s exhausting.

Each time they’ve presented me with a betrothal, I’ve set out to find the groom-to-be a more suitable bride. After all, someone sensible needs to stay home and manage this household. But their latest match, Duke Stephano, isn’t so easy to palm off on anyone else. The debaucher has had three previous wives—all of whom met unfortunate ends. Conscience forbids me from consigning another woman to that fate. As it turns out, I don’t have to . . .

At our betrothal ball—where, quite by accident, I meet a beautiful young man who makes me wonder if perhaps there is something to love at first sight—I stumble upon Duke Stephano with a dagger in his chest. But who killed him? His late wives’ families, his relatives, his mistress, his servants—half of Verona had motive. And when everyone around the Duke begins dying, disappearing, or descending into madness, I know I must uncover the killer . . . before death lies on me like an untimely frost.

On March 23, 2025 my husband and I boarded a flight with the eventual destination of Okinawa, Japan. We arrived in Naha late on the 24th, and didn't make it to our hotel until after midnight on the 25th. (This is memorable because our hotel was on a military base and they didn't want let me on base because even though my name was on my husband's travel orders, I didn't have a DoD ID at the time and no one is permitted on base after midnight without having a pass already or DoD ID.) We did...

Did you have a chance to see the Blood Moon total lunar eclipse on March 3rd? We had a great view of it from our rooftop in Okinawa. Unfortunately it clouded over before we got the tripod dialed in, but we were able to take this photo at the maximum total eclipse. I've been back in Okinawa for a few weeks and in addition to returning in time to see the eclipse, we also had family visit from the US and Taiwan. We had a great visit and I so enjoyed taking care of my 15-month-old grand-nephew. 😍...

I'm back in the US for a few weeks--I flew home at then end of January for a writing retreat in Southern California, which was glorious and sunny, but now I'm back in the Pacific Northwest and it's chilly here! This is, of course, to be expected, but most of my winter clothes are in long-term storage. Oops. Good thing I'm heading back to Okinawa soon! My writing retreat was fabulous--I had a great time talking business and craft with author friends who I've missed dearly this last year, and I...
