June certainly has been interesting! We started the rainy season on June 1st with a direct hit by a typhoon! We were fine. Okinawa is built for this and our house solid. The eye of the storm passed over us, and we had about a six hour break in the storm. It was wild how there was no movement, no wind, no rain, at all, while knowing we were in the center of a cat 1 typhoon. Here's a video I took when the winds were strongest.
A week to the day after Typhoon Jangmi, we had a tsunami after a strong earthquake in the Philippines. The warning system here is very good, with sirens and text alerts, which thankfully, are easily translatable. For us, the wave was just statistical, in that there was a measured tsunami wave but it was tiny. Of far more concern was the damage in the Philippines. This morning as I write this, we are getting rain and wind from Tropical Storm Mekkhala. Mekkhala was a typhoon two days ago but lost a lot of steam on the way to Okinawa. This is what the map looks like right now: It looks more dramatic on the satellite than it is on the ground. So far it feels like a pretty normal windy/rainy day. In other exciting news this month, my son graduated college. 😍 I'm so proud of him! In the midst of storms, tsunamis, and graduations, I've been busy with copyedits on FALSE FLAG, which I turned in to my editor yesterday. Next step is the proofread round. I should have ARCs available for my review team around the end of July. If you are interested in joining my review team, be sure to update your profile using the link at the bottom of this newsletter and select the team you wish to join. FALSE FLAG will be available in digital, print, and audiobook on October 2nd. Order now to lock in the discounted pre-order price! An archaeologist risks everything to stop a disinformation podcaster from using his influence to incite violence in the latest thrilling installment in USA Today Bestselling author Rachel Grant’s Evidence: Under Fire series. Staci Allen has finally landed the job that will help her finish her dissertation, but it comes with a major hitch: her new boss is a famous pseudoarchaeology podcaster, and she intends to use the upcoming Pacific Northwest expedition to debunk his theories and end his grift. But first, she has a pre-wedding celebration to attend, where she crosses paths with Navy SEAL Jake Burns—a huge fan of the podcaster. Jake might be on her team in the paintball war, but he’s definitely the enemy. She can enjoy his pretty face and even the dangerous attraction he triggers with his cocky attitude, but when the weekend-long party is over, she will step into a world that places them firmly on opposite sides. The job proves to be more dangerous than Staci prepared for. Surrounded by a hostile expedition team and trapped on a private island with a podcaster who will do anything to convince his followers his fake history is real, she remains determined to see the job through. Still, nothing prepares her for coming face-to-face with the SEAL she’s trying to forget. As the only man who could infiltrate the team, he could be her unasked-for backup. But the question remains, whose side is Jake really on? Given our stormy weather this month, and that FALSE FLAG returns the Evidence: Under Fire series to the Pacific Northwest, this is a great time to read INTO THE STORM if you haven't already. As a storm rolls in, a team of elite Navy SEALs arrives at a remote lodge for a wilderness training exercise that becomes terrifyingly real… Xavier Rivera planned the exercise down to the smallest detail, but he didn’t plan the arrival of archaeologist Audrey Kendrick—a woman he shared a passionate night with before betraying her in the worst way. As the storm is unleashed on the historic lodge it becomes clear the training has been compromised. Trapped by weather, isolated by the remote wilderness, and silenced as communication with the world has been severed, unarmed SEALs face an unexpected and deadly foe. Audrey and Xavier must set aside their distrust and desire and work together to save a team under fire and survive in a battle against the wild. Grab INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE, COVERT EVIDENCE, and COLD EVIDENCE at Kobo for $4.99 each in Canada and the US. Sale ends June 30th.

The weather has turned pretty sharply in Okinawa this May. We had cool, breezy days for the first half of the month, but in the last 2 weeks the summer humidity has returned and we've had some dramatic rainstorms that triggered flood warnings on the Hija River. Flowers are blooming everywhere. Here are a few I've snapped photos of on my walks. Some are in gardens and others are just growing in the wild.
